Cluster Parish News
described in the document “We Walk by Faith.” This document focuses on the four components of parish life – Word, Worship, Community, and Service – and is available on the diocesan website, www.richmonddiocese.org. As part of our parish selfevaluation, we called parishioners together to discuss the document and asked everyone to respond to a diocesan-prepared survey. The results of that survey and our parish self-evaluation report were forwarded to Bishop DiLorenzo who later visited each of our parishes to discuss the report and our plans for the future. Now our Pastoral Councils are in the midst of preparing the follow up to the original report and bishop’s visit, detailing how we have set about accomplishing the goals we established. This ongoing dialogue seeks to produce a measurable five-year
plan for us. “We Walk by Faith” will be an invaluable tool in the formation of our communities and will help guide our planning discussion as we move forward as the Cluster Parishes of Portsmouth and Chesapeake. (8-29-10)
As Cluster Parishes one of the challenges we face is procuring guest presiders to help with our weekend Masses. With nine weekend Masses – three of which begin at the exact same time - and only two priests, we have to rely on the help of priests who are not permanently assigned to our parishes. Keeping the
celebration of Sunday Eucharist at the center of the life of our communities has been our top priority from the very beginning of our Cluster relationship. We have been blessed by the ministry of several priests of our diocese and some military chaplains who make themselves available so we are able to continue to gather for Mass each Sunday. Msgr. Francis Muench has been with us almost every weekend for several years in addition to his full time position as the Judicial Vicar for the diocese. Unfortunately,
there are many parishes in our country and some in our own diocese that do not have Mass every weekend because of the declining number of priests. Planning for the future in this environment presents some unique challenges for us. Let us continue to pray for our Cluster Parishes – Holy Angels, Resurrection, St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s – and our priests. (8-22-10)
Perhaps by now our children and youth are looking forward to returning to school. Perhaps parents are looking forward to that as well. It is a great time to think about the wonderful opportunity of Catholic education through the regional schools supported by our Cluster parishes. Through a diocesan assessment, all four of our parishes financially support both Portsmouth Catholic Regional School in Portsmouth and Bishop Sullivan High School in Virginia Beach. In addition, many of our families have
children enrolled at Peninsula Catholic in Newport News. Each of these schools has proven an ability to provide an excellent education in the Catholic tradition, graduating students who go on to be some of the most successful in our communities. A Catholic school education is not the only option for families today, but it should be given great consideration when weighing the options. We hope you will choose one of these great schools.
