25 Oct 09: H1N1 and Seasonal Flu
Viruses and Liturgical Celebrations
Along with the recommendations of the Center for Disease
Control and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the
Diocese of Richmond strongly recommends that the following precautionary
measures be taken at liturgical celebrations.
The H1N1 virus (swine flu) as well as seasonal flu viruses are
transmitted by airborne droplets and by contact. Those who are sick
should not attend Mass or other large gatherings. If they do, they
should follow the guidelines below, and also refrain from sharing in the
cup. To miss Mass when one is ill is never a sin.
• In lieu of a handshake at the Sign of Peace at Mass, people may smile
or make a small bow of the head to others as a sign of reverence.
• In lieu of holding hands at the Lord's Prayer, people may pray with
hands folded, or extended or raised in the traditional posture known as
the orans gesture.

Contact Congress on Health Reform. Congress has
adjourned for its August recess. When members of the House of
Representatives and the Senate return to Washington in September, they
will resume debate on various health care proposals. As
discussions continue on health legislation, the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops (USCCB) affirms health care as a basic right belonging
to all human beings and advocates measures to:
1. Protect the life, dignity and health of all from conception until
natural death;
2. Prohibit federal funds from being used for abortion, prohibit
mandated abortion coverage, and preserve the conscience rights of
providers who decline to participate in abortion; and
3. Ensure health care services for immigrant children (born and unborn)
and legal immigrants awaiting citizenship (who are currently banned from
Medicaid for five years under federal law.)
The Virginia Catholic Bishops encourage the parishioners of their dioceses to visit the Virginia Catholic Conference’s website (www.vacatholic.org). The Conference’s site contains statements from the USCCB on health proposals and an action alert enabling Virginia residents to send messages to their U.S. Senators and Representatives.

Church Etiquette reminder:
Please be courteous and prayerful...do not talk during church if
not necessary, especially during the Consecration;
Please be helpful by picking up tissues, bulletins, papers off the
floor and pews before leaving; do not leave the sanctuary in a
mess; Pick-up kneelers and replace
hymnals back to their proper place; Please
turn off all cell phones and beepers before entering the
sanctuary...this is a holy place;
Please restrict the use of the bathrooms. We know that
sometimes it is an emergency, but we have received many, many
complaints of children and adults using the bathrooms especially
during the Consecration. This is a very important, holy part of
Liturgy. Some of the same children have been seen using the
bathrooms more than once during Mass. Please use the bathroom
before coming to Mass.
Parents need to go with children to the bathrooms. We have
found unused paper towels thrown in the trash and toilets stuffed
with paper. As you know, paper products and plumbers are
expensive! Please do not be wasteful!
(We have been asked once again to repeat all of the above by
YOU, the parishioners. Thank you for your support and
cooperation!)

Care of God’s Creation
Sowers of Justice — Come to the Water.
As our candidates are preparing for Easter Baptism, it is a journey out
of the flowing baptismal waters. Not only is the river a symbol, its
energy are the same. Let us care for the water as best we can to keep it
from nuclear and radioactive waste. It is the matrix of our life. It is
as if it says to us: “Care for me, and I will care for you. Destroy me
and you destroy our beautiful planet. “ (From Spring’s Holy Water).- posted

Former Students of St. Paul's High School
From 1950 to 1956, Mr. Ray Chamberland taught physical education and coached football and basketball at St. Paul's High School here in Portsmouth.
In May 2007, Coach and his wife Rita Reagan Chamberland returned to Portsmouth for the class reunions of the St. Paul's classes from 1955 through 1958. After our dinner, the coach spoke of his many humorous memories from his years here at St. Paul's, and has now agreed to record these and additional memories on a DVD or VHS video. Coach is an excellent and entertaining speaker.
We are offering this recording for sale to those who enjoyed these years at St. Paul's High School, or who have family members who enjoyed them. It would also make an excellent gift, or just a souvenir of a more simple time, the 1950s.
Please complete the below portion of this notice, and mail it to: Patrick Morris, 2221 Banstead Road, Midlothian, Va. 23113, along with your $20.00 check for each DVD or VHS video ordered. sale of this video will go to the
Restoration Fund at St. Paul's Catholic
Church, Portsmouth, Virginia.
