St. Paul's Catholic Church

Portsmouth, Virginia

Tours

In 1897, St. Paul’s parishioners  dreamed and then made a reality the current Gothic Revival Architecture church with its treasury of Christian Art. This beautiful historic church is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmark Register.  It is a distinguished landmark in the city of Portsmouth.

As you enter the church you will view twenty-eight stained glass windows which were ordered from Mayer & Co., Munich, Germany from 1900 to 1914.  On November 13, 1905 a Portsmouth Star newspaper article observed, “The fifteen stained glass windows of St. Paul’s … are among the most beautiful works of art in the south.” In 1928,  eleven murals were commissioned and adorn the front of the church over the main altar that is made of Italian marble and Mexican onyx.

The St. Paul’s Docent Guild provides Open House Tours and Special Group Tours to visitors.  If  you are interested in visiting St. Paul’s, would like more information and/or would like to schedule a group tour, please contact Mary Tee Butler on 757 484-1921 or click here to e-mail her.
